How to Split a PDF into Multiple Files
Choose a split strategy based on whether your boundaries come from page groups, individual pages, overlapping lengths, or approximate file size.
Choose a split category
Range creates page groups, Page separates every or selected pages, and Size targets approximate parts in KB or MB.
- Custom: define from-to ranges
- Fixed: repeat a page count
- Select: build visual output batches
- Length: create overlapping ranges of a chosen length
Understand output grouping
Examples make the boundary rules easier to verify before processing.
- Custom 1-3; 4-6 creates two outputs
- Fixed 3 creates consecutive three-page groups
- Every Page creates one PDF per source page
- A request cannot exceed 100 outputs
Split versus Extract
Split creates several outputs, while Extract normally keeps selected pages together in one new PDF.
- Use Split for chapters or repeated batches
- Use Extract for one focused selection
- Use Size when upload limits matter more than page boundaries
Common split mistakes
Incorrect delimiters, excessive output counts, and choosing the wrong category are the usual causes of surprising results.
- Review the visual groups
- Remember that multiple results use ZIP
- Do not assume size targets produce byte-exact parts
